Gold Tone Photographs Orotones or Goldtones Carl E. Moon produced some of his finest photographs as "orotones" or "goldtones", a process that produced images of striking depth and transparency. Made in his Pasadena studio, the orotone was made by printing a reversed photographic image on glass and then backing it with a viscous mixture of powdered gold pigment and banana oil. The image on glass was then framed in an ornate Art Deco frame. The use of gold backing was fairly common during this era, but Moon's orotones were particularly luminous and more stable than most. Orotones are distinguished by a three dimensional quality which is still impressive today. Moon made and marketed orotones early in his career to masterfully illustrated his skills.
